The Riverdale Ravens Home Reading Program
Aim for the Stars!
Research on reading development shows that students who participate in daily
reading will show gains of 23% in reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension,
appreciation of literature and increased self-esteem.
The “key” to unlocking students’ enthusiasm and motivation for reading is finding
books which match their personal interests. Encouraging and supporting daily
home reading activities is a major home school partnership at Riverdale Elementary.
At the beginning of the year every child will receive a Home Reading record sheet where he or she will record their reading.
On the Home Reading record sheet, students write the date of reading, and parents initial, after insuring reading is completed. Students should be reading daily, a minimum of:
Kindergarten- Grade 1 10 minutes
Grades 2-4 20 minutes
Grades 5-7 20 minutes
Students in K-1 may be read to by a parent or sibling.
Completing one Home Reading sheet may take anywhere from 25 to 40, or more nights depending on the child, however we do encourage students to read as regularly as possible. Student “incentives” will be provided as they complete each record sheet.
Participation in the Home Reading program is not mandatory but we do encourage
all students to participate.
